What Others are Saying
Communities with Casinos
“Harrah’s Metropolis Casino has had a tremendous impact on our Ohio River Community. Since the onset, Harrah’s has been an important business leader, employer and partner in our community. The recent addition of a hotel and event center represent progress for the City of Metropolis; progress of Illinois tourism, progress through revenue generation, and progress for the local work force. Harrah’s is a wonderful asset to our community and one that we are proud to consider a great neighbor.”
-Metropolis Mayor Billy McDaniel
“The casino business and restaurant business are getting along well on the Coast,” said Joe Lancon, owner and operator of the Biloxi Schooner, the Fisherman’s Harbor and, Famous Joe’s Sports Grill across the street from the New Palace Casino in Biloxi. “When Beau Rivage opened in 1999, I realized they didn’t actually take any business from me, they brought business because of all the people who came in,” said Lancon.
- Joe Lancon, restaurant owner in Biloxi

Since 2006, polls have shown that 90 percent of Kentuckians want the right to vote on the issue of expanded gaming. During the 2006 legislative session there was also a push for a constitutional amendment and here’s what some of the state newspapers said at the time.
The Ashland Daily Independent
“It is the people of Kentucky-not state legislators-who ultimately will decide whether to allow casino-style gambling in the state…give people a vote ... That strikes us as a reasonable request…”
The Danville Advocate
“It makes sense to keep as much of our money as is possible here in Kentucky. It makes sense that if money spent on gambling will go to education and health care, it ought to go to education and health care here. And we need that money badly.”
The Richmond Register
“the state could certainly use these tax revenues to increase teacher salaries, improve roads and health care as well as other critical budget issues facing the state. Kentuckians are going to spend money at casinos and the only real issue is where? Could Kentucky use the tax revenue casino gambling generates? That’s a no-brainer … in November the citizens of Kentucky should decide casino gambling’s fate.”
The Courier Journal
“the need for additional state revenues is dire, the challenges facing horse racing are many, and the question of whether additional gambling is a wise response to both dilemmas should at last be answered.”
